INNAYAT FAROOQ WASEELA EYE HOSPITAL

Introduction

After ten years of successfully running a hospital, Waseela Foundation is now readying to take its next leap forward: we are building a state-of-the-art, international-standard, comprehensive eye healthcare hospital at the village of Minhais, near Sadhoke, Punjab.

The hospital project is being executed through an innovative development model that the Foundation intends to replicate elsewhere in Pakistan. In the long-term, the Foundation hopes to develop a network of hospitals built on this model throughout the country.

Waseela Foundation is treating the Innayat Farooq Waseela Eye Hospital (IFWEH) as its flagship project. The Hospital will serve as a benchmark project that will establish, refine and continuously improve managerial, operational and fundraising processes. The processes developed and refined at the IFWEH would not only be replicated throughout Waseela Foundation’s planned hospital network, but would also be available to other charities for adoption and adaptation. In particular, Waseela Foundation would provide consultancy services to other charities in adopting its model and improving their internal effeciencies.

The Model

  • Waseela Foundation undertook extensive research in identifying an underserved service area
  • Once a site (i.e. Village of Minhais in District Gujranwala, Punjab) had been identified, the Foundation reached out to the local community
  • Its outreach resulted in identification of a motivated and committed local social worker and community leader
  • The local community leader, here the well-known, Kamonke-based humanitarian, Mr. Ilyas Majeed Sheikh, donated a sizable piece of land as site for the new hospital
  • Waseela Foundation created the IFWEH Trust which included some of its members as well as members of the local community
  • The Foundation leveraged its private sector connections to engage a well-reputed architectural firm with international experience of developing hospitals, namely, Pervaiz Iqbal & Associates, to develop architectural designs for the new hospital
  • The Foundation is now raising funds to build its hospital
  • The Foundation has established standing committees, such as Committee on Construction, Committee on Marketing and Communications, et al, to oversee various parts of the hospital development process
  • The Committees involve Foundation’s members as well as key donors and individuals committed to humanitarian causes. In this way, the Foundation extends its public outreach and leverages a diverse array of private-sector experience and expertise
  • Once completed, the Hospital will be equipped with international standard, imported, top-of-the-line medical equipment and be run by foreign-qualified and experienced medical practitioners
  • Once operationalized, the Hospital will serve more than 100,000 persons per annum
